The number of jobs in the United States for the current ten-year period, through 2031, has been projected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to grow by 8.3 million. Growth across industries will vary, of course – and along with more traditional roles like nurse practitioners, theater workers and athletes, there are some unique roles that have emerged only in recent years, sine the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath.
New on the Job Horizon
As noted by the World Economic Forum, here are some positions offering specialized opportunities, which were nonexistent prior to the pandemic:
- Director of Remote Work: These officers are responsible for keeping remote workers on the same page as on-site personnel. This includes providing all the necessary technology, hardware and software, communication tools, furniture and fixtures.
- XR Immersion Counselor: Since Covid-19, extended reality (XR), which encompasses virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR), has continued to grow. Consumers are using XR across verticals, such as playing video games, entertainment channels, on social networks, and in shopping and travel. XR immersion counselors work with technical artists and software engineering specialists to scale the rollout of all this innovation.
- Cyber-Calamity Forecaster: Think about it. Aside from Covid-19, the other catastrophes in recent years have been cyberattack-related. The ability to forecast such events is critical.
- Tidewater Architect: With climate change and sea level rise in the forefront, these specialists work with nature and help ensure related corporate responsibility in major engineering projects.
- Human-Machine Teaming Manager: The role of robots in the workplace is a current, ongoing and future growing trend. These managers are responsible for building seamless relationships between people and those robots.
Other Growth Areas
These roles, also projected for growth between now and 2031, are likely more familiar, but no less critical:
- Nurse Practitioner: Although they touch many areas of healthcare, demand for more NPs will likely remain high as the Baby Boom generation continues to retire.
- Wind Turbine Service Technician: As wind power costs have decreased, more turbines are being built. This means more workers to service them.
- Theater Worker: Work/life balance demands entertainment, and this means going to the movies. Theater workers encompass ushers, lobby attendants, ticket takers and projectionists.
- Restaurant Cook: As restaurants reopened post-Covid, the need for qualified cooks and chefs also regained strength, a trend which continues circa 2024.
- Data Scientist: Growth in these jobs is driven by the need to mine and analyze an ever-increasing amount of available data.
- Athlete, Umpire or Referee: Sports leagues have expanded and with them, public interest in professional athletics.
- Information Security Analyst: Like cyber-security forecasters, growth in this area is related to the increasing frequency of cyberattacks, as well as growth in online shopping.
