Embracing Diversity: Gaining a Competitive Edge Using Inclusive Employment

“Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it every day.” (Winston Churchill)

How do you celebrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) at your company to benefit everyone and grow your business in today’s competitive market landscape?

Provide Broader Perspectives

Embedding DEIB into your culture fosters a more positive, innovative environment. This in turn breeds creativity, loyalty, productivity, and profitability.

  • Reach a more extensive talent pool. Businesses that focus on DEIB find they can tap into a vast talent pool that they may otherwise have missed. In a recent study, 70 percent of job seekers said they considered diversity a key factor in evaluating prospective employers. Among Gen Z candidates, this percentage is even higher. The more diverse your team, the more diverse your talent pool becomes, boosted by their referrals.
  • Improve business decision-making. The more the makeup of your organization reflects your community and the world at large, the greater the likelihood that people’s decisions will benefit not only each other, but also your customers and other stakeholders. This comes from developing an employee base that represents various genders, races, ethnicities, and walks of life and giving them ongoing opportunities to contribute in a safe, welcoming environment.
  • Outpace your competition. Results of another research study show that businesses with diverse teams are 33 percent more likely to outperform their competitors in profitability. In today’s global marketplace, both employees and customers seek out organizations that reflect their values and perspectives.

DEIB: Spelling It Out

Diversity in the workplace refers to the differences that exist between people. Simple, but profound. And critical because diversity brings different perspectives, ideas, and experiences to the table and helps you create a work environment where everyone feels welcome, valued and supported.

  • Achieve diversity by implementing inclusive hiring, promotion, and staff development policies. For instance, adopt blind resume screening processes to remove potential bias. Employee resource groups and diversity training programs are also very helpful.

The terms “equity” and “equality” are often used interchangeably – but there are notable differences. Equality refers to treating everyone the same, regardless of their backgrounds. Equity, by contrast, focuses on providing fair treatment and access to resources, based on individual needs and circumstances. In other words, equity recognizes that people may have different needs and need different levels of support to achieve the same results.

An inclusive workplace is one where everyone can participate in contributing to business success. And diversity, equity, and inclusion all contribute to belonging, which is critical to employee engagement and development. Why? Because when people feel they belong, they are more likely to be motivated and stay loyal to their company and its future.
