It’s not unusual for hiring managers to receive hundreds of resumes for a single job opening. And increasingly, before your resume even reaches a decision maker, it’s likely to be screened by applicant tracking system (ATS) software. An ATS is often the first step in narrowing down the number of candidates who will remain in the race, before interviews are even scheduled.
So, how do you make sure your resume stands out and makes the final cut? The solution lies in tailoring its content to each position you apply for, with an eye on specific keywords found in the job description.
Start by reviewing the job description.
Of course, you’ve already read it. But comb through the job description in detail and as you do so, jot down keywords and requirements specific to the position.
Next, compare that content to your existing resume.
Highlight those elements that do – and do not – match the job description. This way, you will know which wording to leave in or further emphasize, and which to delete for purposes of this specific application.
Time to update!
Each time you apply for a job, you need to complete this process and update your resume accordingly. Throughout the document, starting with your summary and including your education, skills, and work experience sections, focus on those keywords and the qualities that make you an ideal candidate.
- Include measurable results. Using bulleted list, include quantifiable data to demonstrate your experience, achievements, and impact. This is a meaningful way to illustrate the value you will add if hired. For example, rather than saying you “developed a successful email campaign,” tweak this statement to read, “developed an email campaign that netted a 15 percent monthly increase in sales.”
Delete whatever is not relevant.
Remove any information which will not affect an ATS or recruiter decision. If it’s a challenge to fill the space, remember: being concise is a plus. And, you can always use formatting to make your resume more attractive to read.
About that formatting …
Reformat your resume if necessary to draw attention to the most important details. There are numerous ways to do this including bold, italic or underlined text, proper spacing, and tasteful pops of color. The right use of white space also makes your resume more professional and reader friendly.
Proofread. Then proofread again!
Yes, you may be a bit tired of reviewing your resume at this point, but never overlook proofreading it when you’ve completed your editing. Then, read through it one more time or, better yet, have a trusted friend, or coach do it. Your perseverance will pay off!
